"Where the Queers Are"

Project type

Photo Essay

Date

April 2024-May 2024

Location

North Texas, DFW Metroplex

In North Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, there are few designated spaces that specifically market to the LGBTQ+ community, especially amid the rapid decline of "third spaces." However, those spaces are extremely accepting of all individuals within a queer space.

Finding one another is particularly challenging for the LGBTQ+ community amidst the ongoing culture war in American politics, where LGBTQ+ rights are actively under threat. For example, Sue Ellen’s in Dallas, Texas, is one of only two all-lesbian bars in Texas and one of 23 in America. In Denton, Texas, there is a significant attraction for the queer community, evident in the music scene, artist markets, and the liberal environment of the universities in the area. Denton hosts numerous events open to the LGBTQ+ and queer communities, such as Glitterbomb and Drag Shows, which inherently draw in diverse individuals. The term "queer" historically connoted "strange" or "peculiar" and was originally used as an insult. However, today, it has been reclaimed as an umbrella term encompassing identities other than heterosexual or cisgender.

Some of the most significant spaces for queer and LGBTQ+ individuals are those created within intimate settings, such as friend groups or homes, which foster a welcoming environment for people to be authentically them.
